Chicken farming - the good, bad and the ugly

Owning a flock of chicken is such a great asset - from fresh, free organic eggs each morning, to a hands free way ro rid your land of weeds and pests. It's also very satisfying, and a great hobby which can be both profitable and ecomonomical at the same time.

However, there are a few downsides to owning a flock of chickens in your back yard.

First of all, if you speak to chicken owners, they'll tell you many horror stories of how their chickens have been eaten by foxes, berds of prey or other wild animals of the night.

There is nothing worse than goind downstairs one morning and seeing the scenes of a masasacre, with all that time, care, energy and money wiped out overnight.

And if they survive the harsh hunting grounds of the average home owner's back yard, then you'll still have to worry about whether your chickens are warm enough, and how you're going to regularly clean and even relocate the chicken coup when required.

Then there's the small task of collecting the eggs. Most set ups make this would-be simple task a real hassle, and it doesn't have to be!

But chicken coops are not always that straight forward...

All of these things can be avoided with a well built chicken coup. The problem is, chicken coups also come with a few problems of their own too...

First of all, most prebuilt coups cost a lot of money, and don't always come in the dimensions you need. You will often find that you have to pay extra not just for the overpriced materials that the coup was made from, but you'll also have to pay for more or less than you need due to the predetermined sizes.

So what's the alternative? Well, you could of course build you own chicken coup!

But there is still a problem with building a chicken coop

You see, unfortunately, building your own chicken coop is not as easy as hammering some wood and wire mesh together. You need to take into account materials, insulation, ventilation, lighting, positioning, nesting, perches, litter collection and protection from the elements and other animals.

Furthermore, you will often find that you need special tools, skills or experience to get the job done properly, especially when you don't have decent plans to work from.

Speaking of plans, there are a lot of them out there. However, during my research, I discovered that a lot of these other books and guides never seem to include detailed, well presented plans you can follow along with, and often require labour intensive DIY.

Chicken House PlansWhat is the product I'm recommending?

There's a new guide available exclusively online called Building A Chicken Coop.

This is a downloadable book which does not require fancy tools in order to follow along. The plans are designed so that anyone with basic tools like a handsaw, hammer, drill etc can build great quality, secure chicken coops.

With easy to follow cross-sectional diagrams that include exact dimensions and required materials, you can use this guide to build your own coop regardless of your current DIY skills.

You will also save money by building your own coop too. In fact, according to the publishers of this guide, "Based on our analysis you normally save over 50% by building your own coop. That can be hundreds of dollars saved on larger coops" - say the authors of BuildingAChickenCoop.com

The great part is, you can print off as many plans as required because they can be downloaded over and over from the website. Therefore, there is no need to worry about getting the plans dirty or having to share plans with helpers.

Bad points

red cross There are very few bad points to pick up on with this guide, and the only things we could possibly mention is that firstly, it would be nice to see more plans included. Although you get enough for the average chicken owner to be more than content with, there's always room for more designs in our opinion.

red cross Secondly, although they claim that the chicken coops are easy to build, you'll still need a basic level of DIY and physical ability to actually build a chicken coup. Having said that, it really is minimal so don't assume we mean you need to be some sort of carpenter or architect here!

good Points

green tick There's a lot of value going on with these guides. You get a lot of information not just on the practical side of chicken coops, but the theory and planning of owning chickens too, which actually comes in very handy in the overall scheme of things.

green tick Also, there are a lot of clear, professional plans which are easy to understand. There's nothing worse than buying a book and having few plans to follow, and just a few sketches of somebody's ideas. This guide provides you with very clear steps and diagrams which make the process very easy to follow.

green tick Again, there are great supportive tips on getting the right birds, care and protection and ongoing maintenance duties which really make this guide an overall chicken care resource worth the small investment, certainly in our opinion anyway.

green tick Speaking of money, it's also a relief to know that all of these chicken coops can be built very cheaply and will save you a lot of money in comparison to pre built coups.

Who is it right for?

We would say that this is ideal for anyone looking to buy chickens and be fully prepared for the care and maintenance of them throughout the year.

It's also great for people who are having a hard time cleaning, maintaining, farming and generally protecting their chickens from prying eyes...as the coops and care tips give you a lot of options and preparation for such problems in the future, both in the main guide and from the additional bonuses.

Building A Chicken Coop - The Guide would also be perfect for budget conscious chicken farmers, who are either new or experienced. With the cost savings from building your own chicken coop, along with the long term praticalities, these chicken coops are very affordable and financially a great option for those on a budget, regardless of flock size or amount of land available to the owner.

Overall Conclusion

One of the most useful aspects of this guide is the professional plans, which makes building a chicken coup childsplay. Not only that, but you also get tip offs on the best places to source your materials for dirt cheap, and ultimately save yourself a lot of money making your own coup instead of buying those prebuilt, over priced coups where you pay through the nose for materials you don't need.

Furthermore, this guide gives you piece of mind, knowing your chickens are being kept safe, warm and able to produce fresh organic eggs in peace.

So not only will you be getting delicious fresh organic eggs every morning, you'll also be able to fertilize your garden and farm a flock of any size, without preying eyes bearing down on your assets!

Although it would have been nicer to see more variety of plans, the plans that are provided give you some great looking, highly effective and safe coups which are relatively easy and cheap to assemble, without needed expensive tools or a degree in carpentry.

All in all, the value is superb...all of the secondary bonus guides perfectly compliment the main guide, giving you not just a quick and easy way to build your own cost effective, safe chicken coup, but also provides you with everything you need, from buying birds, planning, keeping costs down, protecting your birds and untimately, getting the best possible produce and fertilization out of them from day one.
